Drug Prevention Education

Sunday, May 6, the Sallisaw Seventh-day Adventist Church held a Youth event in conjunction with the Cherokee Nation and Help-in-Crisis.  Levi Kheeler, who works in Drug Prevention for the Cherokee Nation began the afternoon with a presentation on drugs and alcohol and the dangers of addiction.  Mary Jo Cole and Sandra Dearborn from Help-in-Crises gave presentations regarding sexual assault and respect in relationships.

Though attendance was lower than expected, those youth that attended enjoyed the sessions.  One young man said, "These were good.  I wish more kids had come."  Another young man, a member of the Cherokee tribe, spoke with Levi Kheeler for fifteen minutes after the first presentation.  He confided that his father was addicted to "crack" and wanted to know what could be done.  One of the young ladies that attended remarked, "This really opened my eyes about relationships."

Elder Robert Holbrook, Oklahoma Conference Youth Director, came and wrapped up the day with a devotional thought touching on the uniqueness that each person has.

After the meetings, Levi Kheeler approached Jim Landelius, Pastor of the Sallisaw Seventh-day Adventist Church and asked if he would be interested in helping start an anti-drug coalition in Sallisaw.  Jim responded in the positive and will look at ways both he and the Church can help in the community with the ultimate goal of sharing Christ's love.

Ministry of Healing, pg. 143, says that Christ's method alone will bring true success.  When Jesus was on the earth, He met the physical needs of the people then they were open to hear the truths He would present.  As the Seventh-day Adventist Church becomes more active in their communities, more people will have the opportunity to hear of Jesus' love for them.
