Smiling faces, Valentine’s Day crafts and special Under the Flag Lakota song greeted several special visitors to the Little Eagle Day School in Little Eagle, SD located on the Standing Rock Reservation. The visitors? Debra Claymore-Cuny, Dakota Conference Native Ministries Coordinator, Pastor Fred and Heidi Shoemaker and Arthur Hafner of the Mobridge Adventist Church. Their purpose? Distribute new, warm coats to young children (kindergarten thru 3rd grades) as part of an ongoing Dakota Conference Native Ministries program.
More than 35 coats were given to the excited, happy children along with Christian coloring, activity and story books which were donated by the Pierre Adventist Church.
“It’s my birthday,” exclaimed a young girl named Petra, who turned seven the day of the February 9, 2007 visit. Petra chose a black winter jacket trimmed with fur before selecting a jacket for her younger sister. Kindergarten teacher Betty Archambault assisted the division of coats to other grades, along with Claymore-Cuny, Haefer and the Shoemaker’s.
