LifeTalk Radio: American Indian Living broadcasts

The broadcast encompasses a broad range of health issues, viewed in a holistic context in keeping with traditional Native American perspectives.  The program provides practical material for everyone in Indian Country.  Special attention is given to topics of current interest: e.g., applying traditional First Nation health practices today; Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome as it relates to mistreated people groups; diabetes treatment (as well as preventing diabetes among Native American youth); new hope for addictions; cultivating mental health when faced with difficulties; environmental health; and the value of tribal communities in promoting health.

Host for the broadcast, David DeRose, MD, MPH is currently President of CompassHealth, Inc. In that capacity he helps individuals, organizations, and communities maximize their health through lectures, seminars, workshops, written materials, and radio and television programming.  He is a board-certified specialist in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine.  He also holds a Masters of Public Health degree with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Health Education. Dr. DeRose’s research has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Annals of Epidemiology, and Preventive Medicine.

He has worked closely with many Native Americans including tribal leaders in an attempt to help address health problems in Indian Country.  His treatment strategies are based on natural therapies that provide new hope for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Dr. DeRose can also relate well to urban Indians. He was born in Chicago, practiced medicine in the New York City area, and for four years directed community-oriented preventive medicine programs for one of America’s largest hospital systems—Florida Hospital—based in Orlando, Florida.

Dear Friend,

Thanks for taking a few moments to learn about our health radio show.  I think you’ll be excited about this new weekly offering in Indian Country.

My work as physician, researcher, and lecturer has taken me throughout United States and Canada.  As I’ve worked with Native Americans from many tribal backgrounds, I’ve been convinced that although health concerns differ from tribe to tribe there are often striking similarities.  AIL will look at health issues that have relevance across tribal lines.

Each week, I’ll be drawing on my background as an experienced radio host and interviewer to bring some of the leading authorities on Native American Health issues into your community.  We’ll also feature other leading health experts who have messages that especially resonate in Indian Country.

In general, we’ll have toll free phone lines open for your listeners to call in and join the dialogue.  In this way, the program will take on added relevance for your community.

Some of the topics that we have planned for AIL are as follows:
    1. Traditional health practices of First Nation peoples:  lessons that are applicable today
    2. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome as it relates to mistreated people groups
    3. Diabetes treatment and prevention:  Promising programs
    4. Asthma and allergies
    5. New hope for addictions
    6. Environmental Health:  How to survive and thrive when nature has been misused
    7. When health resources are scarce:  Principles of self-care
    8. Social Health:  the value of tribal communities in promoting health
As host of an interactive show, I also welcome your feedback.  If there are other topics that are of special relevance to your listeners, we would like to bring expert advice into your community by means of American Indian Living.  Additionally, if you think individuals in your community should be featured on AIL we will seriously consider every such recommendation

I’m looking forward to your joining us make Indian Country healthier in 2008.

Yours for Optimal health,

David DeRose, MD, MPH
